Dr. Valerie Oliphant, PT, DPT
I believe in the healing power of moving and story telling. My mom is a costumer, so my own story started back and onstage. Prior to completing my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, I worked as a professional dancer and aerialist in NYC and here in Washington, DC (and still do!). Whether you’re dancing at a wedding, chasing your kids, or running off a long day at work, movement is how we stay human.
My path to PT wasn't a straight line, but more of an aerial loop. It wasn't until I worked for a non-profit in an active-conflict zone that I truly realized how essential "freedom of movement" is. It took me four years to return lost movement to my body, but with it I regained more than just my ability to move: I rediscovered the ability to truly enjoy life. I began teaching a ballet barre class at a local dance studio. That led me to pole dancing, which led to aerial sling, lyra, and "lollipop." I realized that the body is the ultimate puzzle—one I’ve been solving ever since.
Physical therapy is the perfect blend of my love of movement and my desire to help people heal. I love "puzzling out" the kinetic chain and getting to the root cause of issues. My goal is to hand you the "instruction manual" to your own body so you can feel empowered, not just patched up.
Once my friends started having kids, my phone blew up with texts about postpartum pain and incontinence. That "text-a-friend" spark led me to specialize in pelvic health. I know these conversations can feel vulnerable, so I prioritize a safe, trauma-informed space for clients of all genders and ages. If it involves the pelvic floor, I’ve heard it, I’ve seen it, and I’m here to help you fix it—zero judgment allowed.
In addition to dance and circus, I am passionate about helping people experiencing pelvic floor issues, from incontinence to chronic pain and more. I know working on these issues can be vulnerable and offer a safe treatment space with a trauma-informed care lens for clients of all genders and ages.
Off the Clock & Upside Down When I’m not at Rose, you can find me:
-
Practicing my latest dance routine (currently performing with Alchemy Performing Arts).
-
Snuggling my sweet Great Dane, Juno.
-
Deep in a D&D campaign or fantasy novel.
-
At my sewing machine, making my own costumes and clothes.
The Credentials I studied Dance and International Studies at the University of Arizona, earned an MA in Conflict Resolution with a focus on trauma healing from Georgetown University, and completed my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at George Washington University. I also hold advanced certifications in pelvic health, trigger point dry needling and—my personal favorite—treating circus artists.
