Cervical Facet Joint Syndrome

Expert Cervical Facet Joint Syndrome Treatment in Washington, DC

Do you feel localized neck pain when turning your head, looking up, or sitting for long periods? These could be signs of cervical facet joint syndrome, a condition that occurs when the small joints in your neck become irritated or inflamed. At Rose Physical Therapy, with locations in Navy Yard, Friendship Heights, and Farragut North, our specialists provide one-on-one care to help you find relief and improve your daily function.

What Is Cervical Facet Joint Syndrome?

Your cervical spine (neck) contains small joints at each vertebral level that guide movement and provide stability. These facet joints can become painful due to repetitive motion, poor posture (such as forward head position), or degenerative changes. When irritated, they limit motion and cause significant localized discomfort.

Common Symptoms of Cervical Facet Pain

Unlike nerve root issues, facet joint pain typically does not involve numbness or weakness in the arms. Instead, you may notice:

  • Localized Aching: Sharp or dull pain on one or both sides of the neck.

  • Movement Triggers: Pain that worsens when turning the head or looking up.

  • Referred Pain: Discomfort that travels into the upper back or behind the shoulder blade.

  • Secondary Headaches: Pain starting at the base of the skull.

  • Tenderness: Sensitivity when pressing near the spine or upper back/shoulders.

Diagnosis and Evaluation at Rose PT

At Rose Physical Therapy, we use manual palpation, motion testing, and symptom behavior to identify facet-related dysfunction. Imaging is not always required to begin effective treatment. Your therapist will assess:

  • Joint Mechanics: Evaluating cervical mobility and identifying stiff segments.

  • Postural Alignment: Assessing how your desk setup or screen time habits affect your joints.

  • Muscle Flexibility: Checking for guarding in the neck and upper back.

  • Movement Patterns: Identifying which specific motions trigger or reduce your symptoms.

Your Path to Recovery: Our Treatment Approach

Our goal is to restore normal joint gliding and reduce the inflammatory load on the facet joints. Your personalized plan of care may include:

  • Manual Therapy: Specialized techniques to mobilize stiff joints and relieve muscle guarding.

  • Postural Retraining: Strategies to reduce cervical compression during your daily DC commute or workday.

  • Targeted Strengthening: Building the support system your neck needs to stay mobile and pain-free.
