Post-Polio Syndrome

Expert Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) Care in Washington, DC

Are you noticing new muscle weakness, fatigue, or pain decades after recovering from polio? Do everyday activities feel harder than they used to, despite years of being active and independent? You may be experiencing post-polio syndrome—a condition that affects polio survivors later in life, often leading to renewed functional challenges.

At Rose Physical Therapy, with clinics in Navy Yard, Friendship Heights, and Farragut North, we provide thoughtful, one-on-one care to help you preserve strength and manage the effects of PPS.

Understanding Post-Polio Syndrome: When the Body Asks for Reinforcement

Post-polio syndrome is a neurological condition that can emerge 15 to 40 years after the initial infection. During the original illness, polio damages the motor neurons that power your muscles. While the nervous system initially compensates to restore movement, these overworked nerve cells can begin to fail over time, leading to gradual weakness.

Common Signs and Symptoms

PPS is not a recurrence of the polio virus or contagious; it is a long-term response to previous nerve damage and compensatory overload. Red flags include:

  • New Muscle Weakness: Often occurring in muscles previously affected or those that seemed unaffected.

  • Profound Fatigue: Exhaustion that occurs even after minimal exertion.

  • Muscle or Joint Pain: Often resulting from increased strain on the musculoskeletal system.

  • Mobility Challenges: Increasing difficulty walking or climbing stairs.

  • Cold Intolerance: Unusual sensitivity to cold in the limbs.

  • Respiratory Changes: Breathing or swallowing difficulties in some cases.

How PPS is Evaluated at Rose Physical Therapy

At Rose PT, we understand the delicate balance required when treating PPS: doing too much can worsen symptoms, but doing too little leads to deconditioning. Our comprehensive evaluation focuses on your functional capacity and energy levels. Your assessment may include:

  • Functional Strength & Mobility Testing: Identifying your current physical baseline.

  • Gait Analysis & Balance Evaluation: Ensuring safety and efficiency in your daily movement.

  • Energy Conservation Assessment: Analyzing your daily routine to help minimize "compensatory overload."

Our goal is to help you maintain your independence while protecting your nerve cells from further exhaustion. We offer elite, personalized rehabilitation strategies designed specifically for the unique needs of polio survivors.
