Thoracic Facet Joint Syndrome

Cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD) occurs when the discs in the neck gradually lose hydration and flexibility, leading to neck pain, stiffness, and sometimes numbness or tingling in the arms. Physical therapy can help restore mobility, strengthen the neck, and reduce symptoms so you can move comfortably again.

Do you experience persistent neck pain, stiffness, or occasional numbness and tingling in your arms? You may be dealing with cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD). Despite the name, DDD is not truly a disease. It is a common condition caused by age-related changes to the discs in your neck.

At Rose Physical Therapy, our experienced specialists provide one-on-one, evidence-based care to help you manage symptoms and improve neck function. Whether you are commuting to Capitol Hill or staying active in the Navy Yard, we focus on helping you move comfortably throughout your day.

What Is Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease?

The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae cushioned by intervertebral discs. These discs have a gel-like center and a fibrous outer layer that help absorb shock and allow the neck to move smoothly.

Over time, these discs can lose hydration and elasticity. As the discs become thinner, they may place more stress on surrounding joints and nerves. This process can lead to inflammation, joint irritation, and nerve sensitivity that contribute to neck pain and stiffness.

Common Contributors to Cervical DDD

Several factors can increase stress on the discs in the neck.

• Aging: Natural disc dehydration and wear that occurs over time.
• Postural Stress: Slouched posture from extended screen time or desk work.
• Repetitive Movement: Frequent lifting, bending, or overhead work.
• Injury: Trauma such as whiplash or falls that affect spinal structures.
• Genetics: A family history of disc problems or spinal arthritis.

Many people develop symptoms gradually as daily habits place repeated stress on the cervical spine.

Symptoms of Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease

Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to more persistent pain.

• Chronic Neck Pain: Dull, achy, or occasionally sharp sensations.
• Stiffness: Often noticeable in the morning or after inactivity.
• Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty turning your head while driving or looking over your shoulder.
• Radiating Symptoms: Pain, numbness, or tingling that travels into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
• Headaches: Often felt at the base of the skull.

These symptoms may worsen after long hours at a computer or during repetitive neck movements.
