Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Expert Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) Treatment in Washington, DC

Are you experiencing persistent pain, numbness, or a cold sensation in your shoulder, arm, or hand? Do these symptoms worsen when you reach overhead or during specific activities? You might be suffering from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). At Rose Physical Therapy, our specialists provide elite, comprehensive evaluations to help you find lasting relief and improve your quality of life.

What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

TOS results from the compression of nerves or blood vessels in the thoracic outlet—the narrow passageway between your collarbone (clavicle) and your first rib. This space serves as a "highway" for vital structures traveling from your neck to your arm. When this area becomes crowded, it can lead to debilitating symptoms.

The Three Types of TOS:

  • Neurogenic TOS: The most common variety, involving compression of the brachial plexus (nerves controlling arm movement and sensation).

  • Vascular TOS (Arterial): Compression of the arteries, potentially decreasing blood flow to the hand.

  • Vascular TOS (Venous): Compression of the veins, which can cause swelling or even blood clots in the arm.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

TOS can be triggered by structural issues or lifestyle factors common in the DC area:

  • Anatomical Abnormalities: Being born with an "extra" rib (cervical rib) or variations in muscle structure.

  • Trauma: Whiplash from a car accident or direct impact to the shoulder/neck.

  • Repetitive Activities: Jobs or hobbies involving frequent overhead reaching, heavy lifting, or prolonged "desk posture."

  • Physical Changes: Significant weight gain or body changes during pregnancy can increase pressure in the thoracic outlet.

How Rose Physical Therapy Can Help

Effective TOS recovery requires more than just treating the pain; it requires opening the "space" in the thoracic outlet. Our evidence-based approach at Rose PT includes:

  • Postural Realignment: Identifying habits that "close down" the outlet.

  • Manual Therapy: Gentle techniques to mobilize the first rib and surrounding muscles.

  • Targeted Stretching & Strengthening: Balancing the muscles of the neck and chest to reduce nerve tension.
